The Problem with Washing Your Water
Washing your water is a great way to stay healthy, but it may not be the best way to keep it that way. Yonat Zilberg, a microbiologist at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, has found that washing your water does not actually kill all of the harmful bacteria and protozoa that can make you sick. In fact, she has found that rinsing your water before drinking it may not even be necessary.
Zilberg’s study was published in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology. She tested samples of municipal water from six different places around Israel and found that while all six had harmful bacteria and protozoa, only one of them required rinsing before drinking. The other five didn’t need to be rinsed at all. Zilberg says this is because municipal water is treated with chlorine before it goes out into the public supply system. Chlorine kills most of the bacteria and protozoa, leaving only those resistant to chlorine dead.
